1 out of 5 stars Not worth a penny   March 12, 2008

I bought Mr. Clean Auto Dry at Target, thinking it might suffice for quick washes when I don't have time to do the full wash-and-dry by hand. After one use, it's back to the store with this junk. It leaves a visible, filmy residue behind that you can feel if you run a towel over your paint finish. My car has several coats of wax on it and is typically very slippery.

I had to re-wash the car with a traditional high-quality wash and wash mitt, and dry with a waffle-weave. The worst part? Mr. Clean Auto Dry uses a ton more water and takes more time with the filling, spraying, washing, rinsing, and then re-rinsing using the super-special ionized filtered mumbo-jumbo water.

Don't waste your time or money on this product. There's no shortcut around a good hand wash and dry with a good microfiber. Not if you value your car's finish.

5 out of 5 stars Really does work!   November 16, 2007
I just want to add my vote as one who was actually very surprised at how well it works. I've been in the car business for over 30 years and have seen more ways to wash a car than most people. This thing actually works IF you do it the way they instruct, which is really the way you should wash a car anyway (section by section, out of direct sunlight). The only difference is you rinse the car with the filtered water instead of drying the car with a chamois, rag or whatever. I can buy the replacement filters for about $6 at my local Walmart, and the soap for about the same. I've washed about 6 times with VERY hard water and only now need to replace the filter. That's $2 per wash and it sure saves me the time and effort to dry my car. Worth it to me!

1 out of 5 stars Don't throw away your chamois   November 1, 2007

I purchased the Mr. Clean Autodry to use on my brand new 2008 Infiniti G37S that wasn't even dirty yet. It was only dusty and it had a few bug splats. I washed and rinsed the car as instructed, and then performed the final rinse on the Autodry final rinse setting. I waited in anticipation for the water to sheet off the car as it does in the TV commercial - nothing happened. I rinsed again, but there was still water standing on the car. Perhaps the water wouldn't have spotted the paint, but I wasn't taking a chance. I got my chamois and dried the car as I would have without Mr. Clean's help.

I can't recommend this product, and it's going back to the store for a refund.

3 out of 5 stars not worth it if you're in a hurry. ok if you have all day   August 9, 2007
For any serious detailer, this product is not for you. The science itself works - the water does sheet off the car, and it will dry without spotting if directions are followed to the letter. The achilles heel of the system is the barely detectable trickle of water that comes out of the unit when you try to rinse the car. Because it is filtered water, the output pressure is barely above zero, and it probably took me about 20 minutes to rinse off my SUV adequately.

In that amount of time I could have easily dried the car by hand twice. This means blowing the car dry with my leaf blower (takes 5 minutes), then finishing with a light spray of quick detailer to remove any early spotting (another 5 minutes).

If you have one car and you don't mind taking LONGER to get it done, then this product is for you. Perhaps if you're retired with nothing to do for a day, you don't mind waiting LONGER before you can apply your sealant, you don't mind being stuck with the Mr. Clean shampoo, and if you just want to sit back in a lawn chair with a beer, to enjoy watching the car dry spotlessly, then this will suit your needs.

If you are truly in a hurry, and want to move fast, then this is not for you. You'd do much better to blow the car off with a leaf blower, and dry the few remaining drops by hand. See [...] - Corvette section - detailing. Also, if you prefer to use Zaino shampoo or Duragloss (my favorites), or other name brand, then you won't like this . In order to get the spotless dry without wiping, you really need to use the Mr. Clean shampoo. These are all reasons that I do not think any pro detailers would use this.

If you're still interested in a spotless dry, without wiping, then check out the industry standard, CRspotless - easily located with a web search.

5 out of 5 stars Great product for dealing with hard water spots   June 25, 2007

Who should buy the Mr. Clean AutoDry system? Someone who has hard water at the hose and who doesn't like to hand dry. The product works great, and as advertised. It is best to use it with a hose quick disconnect so it is easier to maneuver, or you will find yourself untwisting it occasionally.

The first step is to hose down the vehicle with the pass through jet of the AutoDry system. Wet the entire vehicle then fill a wash bucket with water and wet your mitt. I use a wash bucket in order to keep the mitt clean, even though you don't have to. Then switch to soap mode and add a little to the bucket and soap down the area you want to wash.

Turn the unit off and then scrub the area with the mitt, constantly dipping the mitt in the water bucket to get rid of debris. Put the AutoDry back to pass through mode and rinse the area you scrubbed. Move onto the next area, always keeping the entire car slightly wet, don't let the water dry anywhere on the car.

Once the entire car is scrubbed and rinsed, switch to the filtered mode. Start with the roof of the car and work your way down the hood, then down the sides, and down the back. Just be sure to wet each area for at least a little bit, and if there are beaded areas of water, go over them a couple extra times. It is very low water pressure, but it doesn't take much. The low pressure is caused by the filter restricting flow (this is normal). Once the entire car has been rinsed with the low pressure wash your car will dry spot free, even if you have very hard water like I have (expect shorter filter life with hard water).

The system works out to be less than a dollar a wash, much less than going to any automated or self car wash, and it takes a lot less time than drying by hand (all other steps are equal length), with as good of results. I like to stick my car in the garage by a floor fan (or outside in a breeze) to make sure the car drys quickly and completely. I washed a dark blue car and had no spots, I can't say the same when I use the Chamois because my water is so hard. Great product and worth every penny
