The Perfect Tear paper towel holder eliminates waste by allowing exactly the desired number of paper towel sheets to be torn off the roll with just one hand. The secret lies in the secure, horizontally wall-mounted base and the ratchet system inside the towel holder. By allowing the roll to make incremental turns in just one direction, the ratchet holds the roll steady during pulling and tearing, thus preventing unraveling. Three parts come with this towel holder: a weighted chrome arm that protrudes five inches from the wall (two screw holes are on a two-inch center; two 1-1/8-inch screws and two plastic sleeves are included); an 11-inch metal dowel that screws into the arm and features a bullet-shape tip; and a flexible wire cage through which the central dowel passes that conforms to the inside cardboard tube of a paper towel roll. The dowel and cage attach to the arm without tools, but a Phillips-head screwdriver (and possibly a drill) is needed for the wall-mounting.  Great addition to any kitchen October 7, 2008
Ok, it's hard to get excited about a paper towel holder - but this one is about as good as you can get for the price. I've always preferred the "single arm" style rather than type with the two clips, which never hold very well and the roll of paper towels inevitably comes flying off at the worst moments. This model has a slight resistance which keeps the roll from spinning out of control when you're trying to tear off a single sheet, and it works great! It looks good, works as advertised, it's easy to install, and the price is right. Can't ask for more!

This thing is friggin' great! It works perfectly, even with the tempermental Bounty Select-Size paper towels, which always gave me two when I wanted one, and one when I wanted two. One-handed pulls are now a reality, with no rewinding, ever.
Simple to install (mine is under-cabinet, horizontal...just make sure that the screws you use are short enough not to penetrate the cabinet bottom...the supplied screws are only for wall mounting!). BTW, it's easy to take this thing apart to mount it so that you're only dealing with the small base...no springs go flying when you disassemble it and it makes mounting much easier.
The user-reviews here convinced me to try this...I always check for Amazon reviews, even if I am buying the item somewhere else. I'm a skeptic...but I'm now drinking the Perfect-Tear Kool-Aid, too. The review by the bartender convinced me...if this could survive in a behind-bar commercial application, maybe it could survive in my kitchen.
The only negative comment I could make about this product would be about its sound...the ratchets make a high-pitched kind of irritating noise...but, I think I will probably learn to love that sound.
Cheapest (with shipping) I found at the time of order was right here with Amazon, subject to change, of course. It wasn't available locally.
Like most things today, this item is made in you-know-where, but covered by USA design patents. An inexpensive and very satisfying product. I'm getting ready to order two more, for the garage and for the workshop.

this device works great. I use a lot of paper towels. No more rolls coming off when you try to tear a towel off and the roll stops after you get your towel.

Was very useful and serves its purpose. Its great saving the counter space by not having a regular paper towel holder. I recommend you buying this. Very easy to mount and comes with everything. Just get a screw driver.
Best Paper Towel Holder EVER August 13, 2008
This is probably my favorite gadget in my entire kitchen. It works exactly how a paper towel holder should and I wonder why these don't come pre-installed in every house built.
I can't speak more highly of it. It dispenses paper towels quickly when you need it, without too much coming off and puddling on the counter. Hands free operation, easy to refill, and nice looking to boot.
