Product Description From Americas #1 bestselling crime writers comes the extraordinary new Kay Scarpetta novel.
Leaving behind her private forensic pathology practice in Charleston, South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta accepts an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured man on Bellevue Hospitals psychiatric prison ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and when she literally has her gloved hands on him, he begins to talkand the story he has to tell turns out to be one of the most bizarre she has ever heard.
The injuries, he says, were sustained in the course of a murder . . . that he did not commit. Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The one thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murderedand more violent deaths will follow. Gradually, an inexplicable and horrifying truth emerges: Whoever is committing the crimes knows where his prey is at all times. Is it a person, a government? And what is the connection between the victims?
In the days that follow, Scarpetta; her forensic psychologist husband, Benton Wesley; and her niece, Lucy, who has recently formed her own forensic computer investigation firm in New York, will undertake a harrowing chase through cyberspace and the all-too-real streets of the cityan odyssey that will take them at once to places they never knew, and much, much too close to home.
Throughout, Cornwell delivers shocking twists and turns, and the kind of cutting-edge technology that only she can provide. Once again, she proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall.

good product January 7, 2009 I received this book very quickly, and in perfect condition. I am very pleased with the convenience of the purchase. Thanks for the great service.
Amazing! Can't wait for another! January 7, 2009 This was one of the best Scarpetta books yet. I was hardly able to tear myself away from this book. Scarpetta was pretty much thrown into the case when Benton Wesley asked her to see a patient in NYC, Oscar Bane, not knowing yet that Oscar's recently murdered girlfriend was fixated on Scarpetta. Oscar refused to speak to anyone but Scarpetta because he believed that she could help him and save him. Scarpetta sees him as a physician, so everything they say is confidential and she, at first, can say nothing to the investigators around her. Including her new husband, Benton Wesley. I was AMAZED at how Marino popped back into the picture, working for Jaime Berger, the DA on the case. Having gotten himself into rehab, gotten a job and stopped abusing his body, Marino comes back full force. Lucy has calmed down quite a bit. No longer trying to play 'secret agent' so much any more, but no less Lucy. She still impresses with her knowledge of computers. All the questions that everyone had at the end of 'Book of the Dead' are answered in this newest Scarpetta book. Truly an amazing book. My favorite of the entire series. My one and only complaint is that I have to wait so long to read more. It was good to have all my favorite characters back together again. I can't wait to read the next book.
Cornwell stays on top with Scarpetta January 7, 2009 Cornwell is a fantastic writer..I love the way she tells a story and draws me into her books. Her long time characters are way human and likable while the bad guys are disgustingly heinous, hatefilled and easy to hate. This book was an interesting look at dwarfism and the difficulties involved that I had never really thought about. This is an easy and fun read.
I loved Scarpetta! January 7, 2009 As a long time fan of Patricia Cornwell, I often wonder when she will run out of ideas...I will no longer wonder! She keeps the stories fresh and her characters growing while employing her fantastic writing style. Always the twists and turns intrigue me, however this time I was truly surprised by the ending. I actually thought that the NYC medical examiner was somehow involved. Oh well, better to be surprised than to be able to outsmart the author. I am so looking forward to the next book! You should read this as it is entertaining and educational.
Great Book-Welcome back Kay Scarpetta! January 7, 2009 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was so happy that Patricia Cornwell has brought back a favorite character, Dr. Kay Scarpetta!! It seems she has been away too long! It is a another great adventure and scary ride with this new novel. I'm sure we all wondered if Marino would be back, if so in what capacity and what would be happening in Kay and Benton's relationship...and we can't forget Lucy, how did her life progress?! The story involves murder as always and a very scary perp...a story that keeps your heart pumping and your mind jumping ahead wondering what is the killers next move?!! No one, I feel, will be disappointed in this new book carrying on the trials and tribulations of Dr. Scarpetta...and hair raising situations! Anyone who was a Scarpetta follower in Cornwell's previous books should not be disappointed!
