Product Description When the director of the Center for Reproductive Choice is murdered, a town must confront the consequences of choice, the nature of guilt, and the hidden allegiances and hostilities that animate and destroy families and communities. Two weeks before Christmas, Dr. Diana Duprey is found floating face-up in a small lap pool in her back yard. A medical doctor with an abortion practice, and a national figure who inspired passion and ignited tempers, she had been the target of violent threats by right-to-life activists. Her husband, Frank Thomson, a lawyer in the district attorney’s office, fought bitterly with her on the morning of her murder. To reveal the nature of their argument would cost him his career—and more. Diana’s daughter, Megan, also quarreled with her on the day of her death. The Reverend Stephen O’Connell, founder of the town’s outspoken Lifeblood Coalition, had reasons of his own to want Diana’s practice shut down, including her involvement with his troubled teenager. The investigation of the case unleashes a flood of secrets in Duprey’s small Colorado town, whose residents must face haunting questions—and the accusations of their own consciences.

Entertaining audio version November 14, 2008 I listened to this book on an mp3 "playaway" cassette. The narrator, Beth McConnell, has a pleasant, no-frills reading voice and does a good job of portaying the characters. The mystery concerns the death of an abortion doctor and the ensuing criminal investigation. I found the mystery to be compelling, even though I was fairly certain of the murderer's identity half way through the book. The author carefully develops three dimensional characters with believable motives. The story moved briskly and held my interest to the conclusion. In fact, I stayed up late to reach the ending. My only gripe with the story is that the murdered doctor's daughter and spouse (who both loved her) spent very little time in actually grieving for her. The daughter, in particular, seems more concerned with her reactions to her mother's death than the actual loss of her parent. Even so,I found the novel to be an enjoyable experience.
misleading title but interesting story November 13, 2008 The title, *The Abortionist's Daughter*, is misleading. You're led to believe that the daughter of an abortion doctor would launch her own investigation. However, it was nothing like the sort.
Dr. Diana Duprey, the abortionist, is found murdered in her own exercise pool at home. The list of suspects is long, including pro-lifers, the religious rights and parents who were clueless of their daughters' abortions.
In addition, Diana's husband, Frank, and daughter, Megan, are also considered suspects. Witnesses have seen or heard Diana's individual screaming matches with Frank and Megan. Megan's guilt has increased exponentially because her last words to her mother were "have fun killing babies."
The entire investigation is complicated. The medical examiner won't do the autopsy because, in the past, she had an affair with Frank. And the detective, assigned to the case, Huck Berlin, crossed the professional boundaries with Megan.
Going back and forth in flashbacks, Hyde constructs the events leading up to Diana's death. During the course of the investigation, there are a few surprises, which must be investigated.
I thought Hyde had something good going for this story. That is...until she chose who would be the murderer and why Diana was murdered. The murderer and the motive just didn't make sense...an immediate deviation from this character's personality.
Great Audio Book October 4, 2008 I was not sure what to expect with this book but I was pleasantly surprised. The audio version hooked me from the very start.
Dr. Diana is The Abortionist. She is found murdered in her home. Police suspect the husband, an attorney. However, several others have reason to want Dr. Diana out of the picture. A good thriller, that kept my interest through all but the last disc when I had the story figured out. I would still recommend this book; good reader.
The Abortionist's Daughter July 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
D.A. Frank Thompson comes home to find his wife dead in their lap pool. It is obviously a murder. Of course, he is on the list of suspects. But there are others too, considering the controversial job his wife has as an abortionist. Mix in this mystery with a promiscuous daughter who's coming of age, as well as a study in family dynamics, and the result is an intriguing story of love, deception, hate, right, and wrong. The reader is afforded a glimpse into the different characters' ethics and viewpoints concerning various timely issues. I recommend this book.
A unique mystery-thriller-family saga combo May 25, 2008 A doctor at an abortionist clinic is murdered - who did it? The husband? The daughter? The anti-abortionists? or any other number of suspects? If that was all this book was - it'd make a good one hour television show and a so-so mystery read. But, as Diana (the murdered women's story) and the lives of those around hers tales are unfolded while her murder is investigated - it becomes much more. The story is as much about the other characters secrets, guilts and crosses to bear (they all have some issues) that unfold in-line with the mystery tale.
This isn't an action packed or investigative thriller of the Harlen Coben or other popular mystery-thriller writer genre. It's a psychological story of lives unfolding whie discovering who-done-it.
Just for it's uniqueness and great writing style - I recommend it.
